Guidelines for Photo Show Judges

Here is a copy of the “Guidelines for Judges” for you to look over. You may not find all these guidelines in each photograph however these ideas are suggestions of what to look for as you evaluate any photograph.

  • Visually Engaging, Unusual Viewpoint, Creative, Thought Provoking
  • Good use of Subject or “Center of Interest.
  • Good use of Balance – Rule of Thirds or Halves & Radial Balance.
  • Technical Quality – Sharpness & Clarity where intended. Other attributes to consider are; focus, exposure, depth-of-field, lighting, dynamic range, photographic technique, image quality resolution, image content in work, and simplicity. (Not all have to be followed for every photograph.)
  • Good use of Color, Contrast, Tones & Directional Flow.
  • “The Photographic Process” used should be taken into consideration when judging.
  • Image Editing should have no obvious mistakes.
  • Overall Professional Appearance in Presentation.
  • For the Unrestricted Members Only Show, extra points may be given for Creative Presentation and Framing.

This is simply a guideline and in no way determines how or why a judge chooses their favorite or winning images in our shows.
